Teaching

As an Assistant Professor at Augustana College (Rock Island, IL), I teach primary source literacy skills to undergraduate students. I also oversee interns and make it a point to connect their skills and interests with relevant projects. Since 2012, I have taught class sessions on research methodology, primary source literacy, and interpretative skills. I instruct students on how to evaluate the appropriateness of resources and how to locate and use relevant materials. I apply relevant pedagogical methodologies in class sessions and provide hands-on learning for students to critically engage with primary source materials. I also like to seek out new (and sometimes unlikely) partnerships and collaborations in teaching and research.

Some teaching & instruction examples:

  • In 2017, I worked with a computer science professor Dr. Forrest Stonedahl and his CSC285 Software Development students to research, design, and launch a historical fiction video game The Swedish Immigrant Trail (in the style of Oregon Trail).

  • In 2020, I worked with Dr. Kimberly La Palm and the SWED380 students to host an "Old Book Petting Zoo" where students researched titles held in our education collection. We then hosted an event where the students taught participants about their materials and invited visitors to engage with history by handling rare materials.

  • Since 2013, I've supervised interns on projects such as researching and curating exhibits. I also supervise master's degree interns from Uppsala College (Uppsala, Sweden) in archival processing projects.

  • Prior to teaching college level, I taught children's art classes (ages 4-12) for four years. More recently, I have been teaching Swedish handcrafts for groups of all ages.
